What is Ketamine Therapy?

If you’ve ever had surgery, the anesthesiologist may have used ketamine for your sedation. Now, ketamine has also proven to be beneficial in psychiatry. When administered in small therapeutic doses under the guidance of a mental health professional trained in evidence-based best practices, SPRAVATO® (esketamine) therapy can be valuable for treating major depression and other mental health concerns.

The Benefits of Ketamine Therapy

Ketamine therapy is a tool in your mental health toolbox that should be used in conjunction with other treatments, such as cognitive behavior therapy, medication and lifestyle changes. When administered safely and effectively, ketamine may increase glutamate, the most abundant excitatory neuron in the brain. It can also decrease inflammation, and ketamine’s dissociative properties help to encourage brain plasticity, quite literally opening brain pathways to new perspectives helping you to become your best self.

How to Prepare for Ketamine Therapy

Prior to your first session, you will meet with a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner to determine if ketamine therapy aligns with your needs. Prior to your first session, you’ll meet with the therapist who will guide you through the ketamine experience. Here, you set treatment intentions, learn about meditation and other strategies for calming yourself, and the value of journaling before, during and after ketamine sessions. Great focus is placed on building trust with your counselor, since he or she will sit with you during the experience and guide you through the treatment sessions.

Your First Ketamine Therapy Session

Nevada Mental Health follows evidence-based best practices. We use small therapeutic ketamine doses, about one-third or less than the amount used for sedation. You should set aside three hours for each ketamine therapy session, which is conducted in a quiet room with soft music, dim light, and a white noise machine outside to assure privacy. At the start of the session, you will use centering and breathing techniques to ready yourself. Journaling is encouraged before and after your session, and your trusted counselor never leaves your side.

Is Ketamine Therapy For Me?

A full psychiatric assessment is recommended to see if ketamine therapy is right for you.

The Nevada Mental Health team is committed to providing you with a thorough assessment prior to treatment, so that you have the best experience possible. We work with all insurance providers and will also educate you on the therapeutic practices that work best alongside your ketamine therapy sessions. If you struggle with treatment-resistant depression, suicidal ideation or trauma symptoms from PTSD, ketamine therapy may be the perfect addition to your treatment regimen.

Ketamine Therapy may not be advisable if you have:

  • A weakened liver

  • Kidney problems

  • Cardiovascular disease

  • Schizophrenia or bipolar disorder

Ketamine Therapy FAQ

What sets us apart is that every Spravato treatment session is conducted under the direct oversight of our psychiatrists. Our psychiatrists are personally involved in the psychotherapy process, or they coordinate closely with your existing therapist when that is preferred. This helps ensure your treatment is medically supervised, personalized, and integrated with your broader mental health care.

Spravato is an FDA approved nasal spray that contains esketamine, while regular ketamine is usually given off label by IV or injection. The main differences are how they are administered, how they are regulated, and the specific role they play in mental health treatment.

Some patients sit quietly, others discuss their feelings. Again, your trusted counselor is with you throughout the process to help you navigate feelings and emotions that arise during treatment.

Yes, a medical assistant assesses your vital signs – blood pressure, pulse and oxygen levels – before, after, and several times during the treatment. There is also a psychiatric provider onsite to administer the medication and to ensure safety during treatment.

No. Because Spravato can cause sedation, dissociation, or slowed reaction time, patients should not drive themselves home after treatment. You will need to arrange a ride home and plan to take it easy for the rest of the day.

Ketamine’s effects can be felt anywhere between five to 30 minutes after administration. After that, 30 to 40 minutes of discussion, journaling or quiet contemplation ensues. As ketamine’s effects diminish, your therapist safely guides you towards the end of your session, and you may be led to the recovery room where your vital signs will be monitored until you return to baseline. There’s no rush.

Self care is important for 24-48 hours after treatment. Actions and thoughts you undertake in this time can reinforce and maximize neurogenesis, and empower you to take an active role in ongoing treatment and recovery. You should have transportation arrangements to get home after a session, and do not drive, return to work or make major life decisions until you have had eight hours of restful sleep after the session.

For maximum therapeutic benefits, six ketamine therapy sessions over the course of three to four weeks is recommended.
