Dr. Sid Khurana Featured on 8 News Now: Sharenting and Social Media

“Sharenting” is when parents share pictures and information about their child online. Parents often post their children’s accomplishments and milestones on social media, such as graduations and birthdays. While parents have good intentions, “sharenting” has many dangers involved that could harm their children.

Nevada Mental Health’s own Dr. Sid Khurana was recently featured on 8 News Now in a segment covering “sharenting” and how to post about your children safely.

Dr. Khurana mentions studies that show 80% of children under the age of 2 already have something shared for them by their parents on social media. He urges parents to think of their children’s perspective and privacy.

“Would they like to see that information about them?”

Besides a child’s personal opinion about being posted online, “sharenting” poses real dangers with profound consequences such as bullying, identity theft, child predators, and AI exploitation. It’s important to keep personal information like locations, the school they attend, and their birthdays private and offline. This applies to anyone who posts on social media, as it can create an environment ripe for online bullying and real-life consequences as Dr. Khurana has discussed.

At Nevada Mental Health, we understand the unique struggles that children face in our society today, especially in regards to how social media influences one’s life.
